Description
The scope of this work is to improve the discharge flow performances of Wadi Sathan by introducing a structure able to increase the width of its bed. In fact, the reduction of the width of the Wadi by the previous designed retaining structure generated a zone of increased water velocity which is strictly related to scour intensity.
The proposed structure consists of a structure able to widen the Wadi bed in this area and to allow the continuity of the traffic on the original road.
The structure consists of a top slab to carry the traffic flow and a foundation at the same level of the Wadi bed. Therefor the top slab transfers its vertical load to the foundation through a lateral wall setback and perpendicular to the original one, and a set of four piers with smooth edges (semicircular) to allow minimum resistance to the water flow.
From the hydraulic point of view the maximum design water velocity considered for a return period of 100 year, reaches a peak value of 8.4 m/s.
